

Joseph Lovinsky is Principal Hornist of the United
States Army Band and Orchestra “Pershing’s Own”,
The Army Brass Quintet, the Maryland Symphony
Orchestra and the Washington Ballet.
Born in New York City, Joseph began playing horn in
the Dade County public school system and before
beginning formal horn studies at the age of 17, had
already made his Carnegie Hall debut as solo horn of
the McDonald's All American Band. Joseph attended
the Peabody Institute under full scholarship as a
student of Peter Landgren and continued horn studies
as a student of Myron Bloom at the Curtis Institute of
Music. Joseph was later appointed horn teaching
assistant at The Juilliard School and awarded the
Irving Berlin Fellowship for Outstanding Orchestral
Performance before completing horn studies with
James Chambers and Jerome Ashby.
As a professional musician, Joseph has served as
Principal Horn for the Miami City Ballet, the Israel
Pops and later of the National Symphony of the
Dominican Republic. Since 1997, Joseph Lovinsky
has served as principal horn of the Maryland
Symphony Orchestra, after being hand selected by
Barry Tuckwell. In 1999, he toured with Leonard
Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra. He
has also performed in Europe, South America and
Asia and with artists Leonard Bernstein, Midori, Dizzy
Gillespie, Zubin Mehta, Isaac Stern, and Yo-Yo Ma.
A much sought after soloist/clinician, Joseph
Lovinsky is on the faculty at Howard University
continuing a tradition of musicianship he received
from his mentors, Jerome Ashby, James Chambers
and Robert Watt.
